Made From Scratch Bluegrass Band

Cindy White
Cindy White was born in Southport, NC, and raised in Gloucester. She started playing a Silvertone guitar when she was five- in the kitchen with her mom singing and her dad playing along (Daddy sang bass, Momma sang tenor).

When she was eleven, she started taking lessons from Jim Owsley, and joined a country band (Sabrina and the Country Sensations).  The band played all over Virginia, fronted for Barbara Mandrell, Ernest Tubb and Kenny Price.  The band disbanded in 1977 and Cindy put her guitar away, except for playing at a few family gatherings.

Sometime in the 90’s, she started attending Mr. Owsley’s Friday night jams and eventually got back into music, forming the "Growing Grass Bluegrass Band" with Connie, which evolved into Made From Scratch.

She has a Gibson, Dixon, Washburn, Taylor, Martin and Stelling guitar and is still looking for a "mellow" sound. (Obviously, she's a little hard to please.) Cindy also plays a little mandolin (that's her playing "Rawhide" on the Owsley's Store CD).  She's also a great singer, as evidenced by her leads in "Who Will Watch The Home Place?" and "Bluer Than Blue", among others.

Cindy is co-owner of a landscape shrub nursery, which takes up most of her time, but she enjoys going to bluegrass festivals, spending time with family and friends and, especially, playing in the band.
